What is the ReSET project?

ReSET is a new research project being run by staff at University College London. The project will investigate the close connections between the way that young people process their emotions and their social relationships.
A key part of the project is the development of a new school-based training programme in collaboration with young people & experts in the field. The aim being to enhance emotional processing skills; recognising your own emotions and the emotions of others, and social relationships in adolescents. The training will combine both cognitive learning tasks (in the form of online training games) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents – a group-based therapy that is already being used to address wellbeing in adolescents.

What is the aim of the project?

ReSET aims to prevent the development of poor mental health and wellbeing by helping adolescents understand how their emotions impact their social relationships and how their social relationships have an impact on their emotions.

Who funds the project?

The project is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) as part of a £24 million investment to improve the mental health and wellbeing of adolescents in the UK. The collective aim of these new projects is to better understand how and why mental health problems emerge and what makes some young people more vulnerable or resilient than others.

Who is in charge of the project?

Professors Essi Viding (University College London) and Pasco Fearon (University of Cambridge) are the lead co-investigators on the project.

Who will take part in the project?

Young people in Years 7 & 8 in schools in the South-East of England will be invited to take part in this project.
